Ads in residential area flout rules

I refer to the report on plans by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) to ease regulations on ad signs ('Lights, action and more ads', Aug30).

However, the URA has stated that it would not allow free-standing billboards or advertising in residential areas.

Apparently, these regulations are not being enforced in some residential areas, such as Holland-Ulu Pandan, where roadside advertisements are boldly displayed.

For example, at the junction of Mount Sinai Drive and Ulu Pandan Road, Emaar International School has a billboard telling passers-by to attend its open house.

Also, across Holland Road from Jelita Shopping Centre, a rooftop billboard advertises Character Montessori kindergarten - in the heart of a landed property cluster.

Not only are these ads an eyesore in a green, residential neighbourhood, but they could also pose a safety hazard as they distract drivers, especially the signs which are at eye level.
