THE Ministry of National Development (MND) and the Housing and Development Board (HDB) said yesterday that $86.1 million will be spent to upgrade the third batch of sites chosen for the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP).
Thirteen sites, with about 23,000 households, have been chosen for this round of upgrading. This is almost twice the number for NRP Batch 2, which involved seven sites, or 12,600 households.
Details on the sites chosen will be announced over the next few months.
In July, the government said it would ramp up programmes like the NRP to take advantage of lower construction costs and create jobs in the construction industry.
NRP was first announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during the National Day Rally in 2007. Under the initiative, HDB housing blocks built in 1989 or earlier that have not been upgraded under the Main Upgrading Programme (MUP), Interim Upgrading Programme (IUP) or IUP Plus are eligible for NRP.
The budget is $3,400 per flat, which will be fully funded by the government. Improvement works will proceed only if the project gets the support of at least 75 per cent of residents at each site.
