Two performing venues to get facelifts

THE Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall are set for makeovers to help restore their ‘old world charm’ while ‘re-energising them to meet modern functional demands’, the National Arts Council (NAC) said yesterday.

The 149-year-old venues are expected to close from mid-next year for refurbishment and will reopen in 2013.

During this period, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, which performs at the Victoria Concert Hall, will perform at the Esplanade and other venues.

NAC has appointed a consultancy team of five firms to act as the architect, acoustician, theatre planner, mechanical and electrical (M&E) engineer, civil and structural (C&S) engineer and quantity surveyor of the project.

An open two-stage tender was held and submissions were assessed based on the Quality-Fee Selection Method developed by the Building and Construction Authority.

The firms that were chosen are W Architects, Architectural Restoration Consultants, Arup Singapore, T Y Lin International and Rider Levett Bucknall.

Rider Levett Bucknall will act as the project manager and quantity surveyor, while W Architects was appointed architect.

Architectural Restoration Consultants will work on conserving the heritage elements of the buildings, with Arup Singapore and T Y Lin providing the M&E and C&S services.

When completed, both monuments will boast more modern amenities, fire control systems and security measures.

‘The facade of the buildings will be retained and some elements belonging to the original 1905 structure will be restored,’ NAC said.

This includes reinstating the central passageway between Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall that leads to The Arts House.
